Art lecture 22/3 log - Essay workshop, studio allocations and first meeting with our supervisor

Essay workshop 1/3

  • “don't quote deleuze” article about writing an artist statement

  • Be careful about being vague unless so you want to portray openness

  • Don't use “international art english” features (grammar/stylistic) of art press releases

  • Where are we going with the research essay? 6000 words including referencing and bibliography.

  • Due October 20th.

  • Putting into words the thinking of your work, part of the project that ends up with the work, the process, tell the story of what you have read and what it has one for you.

  • Can read whatever you like but has to have a few academic resources to pull it up to the right level.

  • Have to reference everything.

  • Spend about 10 hours hours a week working on the essay.

  • Idea building - below is a picture of the mind map I made in the lecture/workshop with the help of my friend Aviva who has worked within this topic before. My research aim is to explore all of these topics and will highlight them once it is done.

  • Abstract 300-400 words

We met in our groups and introduced ourselves to each other and our supervisor - Jon. We expressed our anxieties, mine are:

  • The studio location and space, I am not 100% happy with my space but it will have to do and it makes me feel better that we don't present in that space.

  • I worry about how much I have to each week as we don't have a set list of things to do or times to do them by. This was met with explanation of treating this course as a profession rather than study and doing about 40 hours a week.

  • I am worried about other commitments such as work and my other paper since I do a conjointly with arts.

We then went over studio allocations - I am not with my group is am in a different studio because we are all spread out and other people claimed our studio spaces before we had the chance. I am next to a girl from my group so at least I have a bit of grounding.
