• I have never read a book that has made me this angry. There are fair points but the way they are presented is just so infuriating. I have never felt as significant as I do now being a Emigrent.

• · “For the present it is better to accept the notion of a bicultural New Zealand, as preferred by the Maori, than to create an unnecessary and damaging controversy by insisting on multiculturalism.” 1

• · By my definitions of multi and bi cultural terms that statement is saying there are only 2 cultures in NZ. This isn’t true in my perspective – so many people live here and are from a huge range of cultures so why shouldn’t they be identified? Why do they have to suppress other cultures to make themselves feel better?

• · Everything I just said is then in the book saying Pakeha always argue that all cultures should be treated fairly (which they should)

• · “In many cases it is a fact that this argument provides a convenient means by which many Pakeha can deny the Maori what they want.” 1

• · Oh great so now we are spiteful too! Fucking great.

• · “It is entirely natural that a people who went through that experience (‘trauma of the loss of their lands and mana’) should show extreme hurt and anger, and it would help matters considerably if Pakeha were to keep this in their mind and not over-react to everything said by the Maori.” 2

• · “the Maori population is small and there is real fear among them of being submerged in the Pakeha ethos” 4

• · So they are fearing becoming what they have made everyone else….

• · “The Maori would do harm to themselves if they followed the view that they have to discard everything that is Pakeha or Western and recede entirely into their roots,” 5

• · “All cultures have undergone change and borrowing, and there is always a flow of information and learning between peoples” 5

• · “the Treaty was forgotten and the Pakeha settlers busied themselves with a total take over of New Zealand. And with that, a critical instrument for the creation of a bicultural national community in New Zealand was lost for more than a century.” 6

• · “Any realistic and rational (in Western terms) attempt to deal with the Maori ‘problem’ncannot afford to ignore the fact that the Maori are the only tangata whenua.” 7

• · The chief concerns of Maori: “land, Maori culture and identity, maori language and the education system, their political status and role, the symbols and identity of the nation and their share of economic power and wealth.” 9 (Each one is describe more/fully in the book so if I need more information on them I can find it easily.

• · “There is a great deal of intermarrying between the Maori and the Pakeha.” 22

• · The auther then says if the Maori and Pakeha sort out their issues then we can start considering the other cultures but judging from history I don’t believe there wil ever be a settlement so the cultures will just be ignored.

• · He then says that Pakeha control most of the media and they are truthful but vindictively for example: bringing up the fact that Maori “indulged in cannibalism” 27 “It serves no useful purpose reminding people how brutish and uncivilised their forebears were way back in history.” 27. WHAT A FUCKING HIPOCRIT!! The entire book has been bring up the past European settlers and the bad they did but bring up one bad thing the Maoris did and all shit breaks loose! NO FAIR!!!

• · “It is necessary to take into account the feelings and concerns of the Pakeha and not dismiss them only as a manifestation of racism and their unwillingness to allow Maori a fair deal.” 42
