One on one meeting with Tara 2/6/2017
Talk to Kayla and Aviva for more narratives, people dealing with the same issues. Really good that I worked through the artists to understand how they were sealing with those artists Peter Robinson has moved away from his cultural work. His cultural work was also bases in text works. Power of language and words Can tell your own facts - day to day diary of how my culture or where I come from is questioned. Does it happen on a daily bases? Why do people ask, accent? Doctors form Interviewees Memories Sisters passport Citizenship dual citizenship. Value of the passports and their statuses. Sa have to have visa to visit because too many immigrants The move over. Dropping everything but can't do that anymore. Stricter immigration laws Memory of getting passports in sa Talk about last semester Connect me listing to the meeting and writing about it and connect it to what aviva said about her thoughts o train Maids in sa Done really good ground work Bhaba original essays Explained the idea of the masks but it is cliche. Uni is nz. Family is sa. Who I am in different situations also depends on who I'm with Start by writing the memories/narratives Working in what media? Stick with something you have done before and know how to do Make the making easy since the theory is quite difficult and complicated Printmaking: have a right to do it Beads and wire: can use it because it is a material I know how to work with well and have history from where I came from. Connection to material due to my up bringing. Tell beading stories Start making now, up the motion because I'm falling behind Make some small things to make up for time lost Move away from masks because they have been done so much as a metaphor or a symbol of changing oneself/identity. Too strong theatrical influences, dealing with real life not a show. So overdone it has become a cliche Too obvious Dig deeper and move forward from the mask To easy to understand so people don't push to understand more Make an object that will interest people, unconventional, surprise the audience, doesn't have to have a name, just an object, can start as a mask and be mask like but it doesn't have to function as a mask. It can start as one then change your mind and let it develop. Of I'm going to make a mask I have to make it stand out. Make it like it's never been made before. My idea: bead a whole head and have strands (hair/brainwaves/ideas) of beads and wire coming out of it. Can make it links to a mind map isolating all my ideas and the connections between them. Lisa's work: you feel like you understand it but you don't and only begin to realise by looking at it. The novelty and narrative comes through the work because it's not something that has been done before on that scale so it is a novelty. Multi layers in the story Could have the mind map opposite the hair/brainwaves mimicking it's pattern. Adds layers to the work that will take the audience awhile to conenct/realise.
Put the beaded head in the corner on the floor and the hair bead strands go out to the walls to frame the printed images. Don't start from nowhere. Use materials and concepts I'm used to Make something in the holidays to present when we get back. Claim my studio space back because it's easier to understand and talk about someone's work when it is in the space and you can see it being made and can discuss it. Reclaim my space. Need the stuff around me. Idea: make prints/emboss paper and then can bead through/over that. Mix the print and beading. Makes the print an object: doesn't have to be on the wall. It's your practices Want to use it to talk about an object and get that printmaking quality Emboss some beads into paper Find a visual artist that reflects similar materiality, beads and wire Lisa - Durban diary. Bases stories on her experiences. Start making the mask but can let it hybrid into another object When printmaking can focus on pattern and texture, shape. Quality of the bead. Size Next 6 weeks are critical for making especially in the workshops because undergrad are on holiday. MAKE HEAPS IN THE HOLIDAY What am I going to print?
